5 1/2 months on Sunkyung’s sofa

a

While i was making my book in Korea I was extremely fortunate to meet the picture book artist Cho Sunkyung. I was introduced to him through our publisher Borim press and ended up staying on his sofa for an incredible 5 and a half months. Fairly cheeky even by my standards!

Sunkyung is one of the most interesting people ive met and as it was his work that made me appreciate the craft of book-making i thought i should do a post about him. He is an incredible illustrator and artist. His very interesting career path includes working for the ny times amongst many others as well as designing film sets and several best-selling picturebooks. Underground garden has been translated into 6+ languages. Ive posted some of his work here….

He also single handedly runs the SOME Institute, which is an independent post-graduate course specifically for picture-book making, the likes of which there is really no equivalent in the UK. He has brought the most inspiring people working in picture books worldwide to Korea to teach at SOME including Beatrice Alemagna, Martin Salisbury, Chloe Poizat and Katsumi Komagata… he even brought Marshall Arisman (the legendary co-founder of the School of Visual Arts in NY) over to Korea to do a workshop. Below are some images from his workshops and some shots of the end of year show… the standard of the students work is incredible.

Sunkyung collects picture books from all over the world and his studio is sort of operating as a library to the students. SO many incredible books… better than any bookshop ive ever been in…

Some of the stories i have heard about him are just completely nuts. He was so inspired by the film the sandman (the film that inspired tim burtons nightmare before christmas) he flew to London looking for the studio that made it. This was the early 90s and pre-internet and he had no address for the studio, only the name ‘Batty Berry Mackinnon Productions’. He asked at the heathrow information stand where was ‘aardman animation’ because he knew they could tell him the address. He went by train to Bristol only to be told that he wasnt allowed into the studio uninvited so he waited around until lunchtime when a few animators came out and told him they were based in manchester. By the next day he arrived at their doorstep, he explained his story and they (understandably) allowed him to work with them for the next 2 months. !!!?!!!! and I thought I was passionate about animation…?

I stayed with Sunkyung in his studio and I worked on my book while he worked on his own book ‘Blue Bird’ and we spent most evenings in the local restaurant drinking soju. These are some photos of the studio. He worked downstairs and me on the mezzanine. The last photo is a shot at dawn of the scene of me finishing A Bit Lost (….i wasnt to know i would then drag it on for another 2 months ….aagh! )

DSC04994

During the time i stayed with Sunkyung he was working on ‘Blue Bird’. Its an incredibly beautiful and personal art book based around the death of Sunkyung’s mother. ‘Blue Bird’ (Palang Sae) in Korean means hope. It is a wordless book about the story of a a blue bird who is selflessly looked after by its guardian who is a sow (the pig has a special symbolism in Korea) The mother teaches the bird to fly knowing that she herself cannot fly and that one day the bird will fly away without her. The bird flies away as its mother is left behind in a flock of birds.

As Sunkyung worked on Blue Bird, I worked on A Bit Lost and in fact we had almost exactly the same publishing date. I came to the end of my stay in Korea I began looking for a quote for my book about ‘loss’ and we realised the same quote would suit both A Bit Lost and Blue Bird. It dawned on us that we had both spent the last year working beside each other on a story about the loss of a guardian.

We have been close friends since and in fact sunkyung came over to visit me in Nepal and even gave a lecture at Kathmandu University when i was doing a workshop there.

Sunkyung has also set up his own publishing company SOME books (i dont know how he has the time!!!) I HIGHLY recommend visiting SOME picture book website
You can see SOME institute and if you click the top left link you can also see the books they are publishing, their books have been bought by the V&A/ Roma Museum and many other institutions

As you can imagine A Bit Lost owes Sunkyung a huge debt. Im very grateful for all his advice and input. Gansamida!

Gibson Hotel Artwork

I recently made artwork for the interiors of the Gibson hotel in Dublin. The Gibson is a very modern 4 star hotel right next to, and same owner as the O2, which is Irelands largest music venue. The idea is that the performers and audience can stay after gigs and so its music themed. They asked me if i could do some artwork ‘around rock legends’ Eventually we decided to do artwork with songs hidden inside them. It was a pretty nice job to work on (!)

a

The mural in the bar features three songs hidden inside the images. Its 5m high.

play> Led Zeppelin: Stairway to heaven
play> Fela Kuti: Water No Get Enemy  a good article about Fela
play> Bob Dylan: All Along the watchtower said the joker to thief’

b

The mural in the restaurant is 10 metres wide. In the details you can see..

play> Velvet Underground: Venus in Furs based on the sascha-masoch novel
play> Can: Mushroom ‘when i saw her mushroom head… i was born, i was dead…’ (see the atom bomb)
play> Bob Marley: Get Up, Stand Up ‘if you know what life is worth… ‘ ..some of my favourite lyrics
play> Jefferson Airplane: White Rabbit  (this is the psychedelic section!)
play> Beatles: Lucy in the sky with Diamonds
play> Bob Dylan: Mr Tambourine Man.’..then take me disappearin’ thru the smoke rings of my mind’

 Screen_shot_2011-09-11_at_13.54.23

These additional pieces were used as their menus and elsewhere

play> Bob Dylan: You aint goin nowhere
play>
Billie Holiday: Strange fruit wikipedia article>
play> Beatles: A Day in the Life ‘woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head….’

play> Brian Eno: Spider and I

play> Beatles: Hello Goodbye
play> Pink Floyd: See Emily Play

Screen_shot_2011-09-11_at_13.39.58

These are some shots in production or ideas that didnt make the final cut. The original idea was to have the actual lyrics alongside the artwork but we couldnt do that in the end for fear of copyright issues.
Perhaps the most unusual thing about the project was that i did all of this work while i was in Kathmandu. I was working there with a fair trade group to make rugs when I was approached by the Gibson. In fact i originally proposed that we do the artworks as RUGS!! A huge thanks to the design team and Harry Crosbie, (he’s the developer behind the hotel as well as Vicar StThe O2 and Grand Canal Theatre, some of Dublins nicest venues) The team were very keen on the rugs, I explained about the work we were doing at NODEand they were considering making the entire mural as a rug, the only thing that stopped it was the long production time (for 40sqm+ of hand knotting!!) Instead it was done as a digital laminate print

After we finished the job they have since bought 5 big rugs for the best rooms. They are in the penthouse room where the artists stay, this year including Bob Dylan, Roger Waters and Kylie Minogue (!) Pictured is Gibbo Pink from Aslan in the upstairs rooms

Thanks very much to tim at Neworld design and also to harry crosbie, im very proud to be involved in this. Take a look at the Gibson site below, it really is a stunning hotel

NODE: How to make a rug

A. COLOUR
use up to 6 colours

B. SIZE
560 x 840 pixels
(To create a rug of 1 x 1.5m)

C. Pixels should be ‘aliased’

Screen_shot_2011-11-08_at_22.41.05

Correct: Aliased: each pixel is either light blue or dark blue

Screen_shot_2011-11-08_at_22.40.56

Incorrect: Anti-aliased: each pixel is a blend of blues

If you are unsure how to do this please follow these 3 steps to ensure your file is aliased

1. preserve hard edges.
Photoshop Preferences: General: Image interpolation > preserve hard edges
This means if you resize an image it does not blur between pixels it keeps their color value integrity

Screen_shot_2011-11-08_at_21.4

2. anti alias
Click off ‘anti alias pixels’ on the tool bar preferences

photosp

3. individual pixels
Then use the pencil tool to colour individual pixels accurately

simple_vs_complex

another tip is to use ‘threshold’ to break a photograph or image into different colours. the image on the right has been made in a similar way to this. please follow these instructions to use thresholds

Screen_shot_2011-11-21_at_14.24.42

(note: please do these 3 steps and make sure the carpet design contains only 6 colour values otherwise we cannot be sure we will be able create your carpet)

Driving around London in a tank… DSEI

invitefullres

‘Out of the 26 countries that the UK has highlighted as ‘countries of concern’ for human rights, we sell arms to 16 of them’

DSEI the worlds largest arms fair is on again in London from the 13th sept and i thought i should post about this from a few years ago. I designed this poster/flyer 4 years ago for an anti-DSEI demo.

CLICK the image to read… The facts are REALLY shocking.

As part of the protests, the group the Space Hijackers drove a tank through london. They raised money to buy the tank through selling t-shirts and in fact raised so much money they could buy a tank and hire another one.
Much to the police’s disbelief the vehicles were then insured, taxed and legally road worthy.

Heres some photos:

DSC03492

The tank drew a lot of by-standers…. this fellow was a truck driver who stored his truck close to where the tank was being stored. He was curious and was asking us what it was about. The next thing we knew a police van tried to cut off the path of the tank as it left the compound and before anyone had time to react the TRUCKER GUY JUMPED UNDER THE POLICE VAN !!! he was just a bystander!?! HILARIOUS!!!

I made some videos here and here… also watch this report from the BBC
The space hijackers have been using the tank for other stunts. Eleven of them got arrested at the G20 protests in London for driving it around Bank

There is a protest against DSEI on the 13th of Sept details are here. The UK sells more weapons abroad than any other country (except US)
Join the Campaign against the arms trade

sign this petition to stop Britain arming the world.

Un poco perdido

escap

A Bit Lost is launched in Spanish! It is published with the AMAZING editoria milrazones. Have a look at their books ‘Learning without Dogmas: Secular Education for Co-existence’ (great!!!) Im so proud to have owl published by them. They are keen to support the fair trade projects also. For every copy of ‘Un poco perdido’ sold we are donating a euro to a project to build a library in Colombia. Im really happy to have met them, they sounds GREAT! Hopefully we can do exciting work in future. This window is in Liberia Gil bookstore in Santander.

Check out Olivia and the Wild Thing wearing the t-shirts! 🙂 The owl rug can be found here

NODE: fair trade rugs

8

_IGP1603b

Mail_Attachment-1

Im VERY excited about this… im co-founding a fair trade project called NODE. We’re launching it today.

We will make and sell fair trade rugs. We want to collaborate with great illustrators and designers and produce amazing rugs all through the fair trade group KTS in Kathmandu.

Last year i made some rugs in Nepal and they became really popular. My blog post on it was fwded around and ended up in lots of design magazines. I was then approached by other designers and illustrators who wanted to make their own rugs.
I thought this was a great idea, I was connecting great designers with a great fair trade group. We could even do an exhibition in London of the rugs we made.

There was a couple of problems though, the hassle and cost of doing small orders or one-offs with bank charges and shipping and import duty / declaration forms and all the paperwork put most of the illustrators off.
I also just didnt have the time to actually receive payment and organise shipments etc… the more i got into it the more complicated it got. so the whole thing was stalled.

Then i had a chat with with my friend Akshay Sthapit in Nepal who had recently set up harilo.com
Harilo is a bit like amazon for Nepal. They import and export. And do really complicated logistics so we had the idea of working together.

We have decided to call it Node. Its a point on a network but it also means ‘knot’ in Latin.
Node can help organise exhibitions and help designers to sell their rugs. But unlike a company we want to operate very transparently. We want to do some
thing new and self-organise, a group of designers making nice things that can be successfully scaled up and hopefully help KTS help out more and more people. Thats the plan anyway..!

At the moment we only have my rugs available to buy but we will be adding more soon
And next year we will be organising an exhibition..
Anyone who wants to get involved (whether designing or buying) please email me
chris (at) vegetablefriedrice (dot) com

have a look at the site…
